IB Biology courses
IB Biology (first exams 2025) is organised into four themes: unity and diversity; form and function; interaction and interdependence; and continuity and change, each studied across four levels of biological organisation, from molecules and cells to organisms and ecosystems. Standard Level covers 150 teaching hours, Higher Level 240. HL adds six topics of its own — origins of cells, viruses, classification and cladistics, muscle and motility, chemical signalling, and gene expression — plus extra material within others. Assessment is two written papers — Paper 1 (multiple choice plus data-based questions) and Paper 2 (data-based, short-answer and extended-response questions) — and an internal assessment, the scientific investigation, worth 20%.
Offered at Standard and Higher Level; each course below says which.
